She melted into him, burying her face in his neck, her breath white hot and coming in small pants. The tears stung her skin as they rolled down her cheeks. This wasn’t how these things were supposed to happen. “Peeta….I don’t want to go…” she managed to get out, bunching his shirt into tiny balls with her fists, refusing to let him go. If she held on tight enough, the Peacekeepers wouldn’t be able to peel her away from him. It was so easy to be worried and supportive of those who had been bought, but to actually be in that position was surreal. The complete loss of power, the uncertainty, the fear… no wonder Haymitch turned to drink. She had always acted so strong and wasn’t scared of anything but at this moment, Katniss never felt more lost.
Peeta reached down and took her hand firmly in his, lacing his fingers with hers and pulling away enough to meet her gaze. “Katniss, I’m not going anywhere, I swear on it. I’d give you my life,” he said, his eyes locked with hers, serious and piercing. He tugged on her hand gently and pulled her into the living room with him, helping her to sit on the couch, grabbing a blanket and draping it over her. Peeta moved to sit beside her, wrapping an around around her and pulling her close, pressing his lips softly to her temple, trying to do anything to comfort her even just a little. “Katniss, you’re going to be okay. I won’t let anyone hurt you. You’re safe right now.”

She crumpled in his arms, tears falling down her face and her hands gripping his shirt tightly. She reached behind her to shut the door, leaning down to bury his face in the crook of her neck, furrowing his eyebrows in frustration. He could do nothing but simply be there for her and it pained him more than anything. There was nothing he could do without getting himself killed, and that wasn’t a viable option right now. He swallowed hard, biting the inside of his bottom lip, trying to keep his composure as she cried into him, seeking comfort. He never let go of her, and he let his hand rub gentle circles on her back, trying hard to keep her calm. “Shh, Katniss, it’ll be alright,” he said, his voice soft. “I’m here now, and you’re not going anywhere, not tonight.”
There was nothing you could have done…I know how I feels…To be helpless at he hands of the Capitol. A…A guy I once liked was bought by two people. You can’t do anything. Just..Like Katniss said, be there when they get back.
Yeah, you’re right. I…
Thanks, Delly. You’ve always been a good friend, the support alone helps.

Yeah, you’re right. I just wish there was something I could do, this can’t be it.
Thank you, though, Delly.

That was it. It was a done deal. Katniss had been sold.
This was a nightmare. It was too soon. She wasn’t supposed to go yet. No one could afford her, at least that’s what Toula said. And certainly not that piece of shit Leondias. How the hell could he afford her? The very thought made her…
The words echoed around his head, sirens going off in his mind and the all the world seemed to be laughing in his face now. He had failed to keep her safe, there was nothing he could do now, she would be taken from him. Too soon, she would leave him to board the train and be taken to Leo. It was over and he had lost. Who was he now? What could he do, but stand and watch? He was useless, and Katniss would realize it too, eventually. He couldn’t be the hero this time. Leaning against the kitchen counter, he ran a shaky hand through his hair, his eyes wild with anger, his grip on the marble surface bruising and it turned it knuckles a hot white. He could only think of one thing. If that sick bastard were anywhere near him, his neck would be between Peeta’s fingers, no chance to even beg for any sort of mercy to be given.
Unable to think, all he could see was red, anger boiling to a breaking point and rendering him confused as to how to react. A quick side-swipe of his arm and a vase was sent flying to the other side of the room, shattering against the wall and falling to the floor. It wasn’t enough, nothing could fix this. Slamming his fists to the counter top, he sighed, leaning over it, helpless. He was nothing. He could do nothing. And so what use was he to her, anyway? Swallowing thickly, he was about to break down when he heard her voice, calling his name in the darkness. He had to be strong for her, and be there for her now. It was all he could do. Quickly, his mood changed to panic, to needing her there right then and there. He couldn’t get to her fast enough. He reached out and opened the door, pushing it aside and pulling her into his arms immediately, holding her tightly to him. “Katniss… I’m so sorry…”
Peeta you…You have to be there for her. When she comes back you have to be there. Like she was for you. Be there for her. *hugs him* I’m so sorry, Peeta.
Of course, I just… feel like I failed her.

Peeta! I heard what happened. Is there anything I can do to help?
No, it’s over, there’s nothing we can do. I feel so terrible…
